Northern Sea Route is on the line

The joint tests of the Centre of fishery monitoring and communications and Gazprom Space Systems have proved the possibility to provide satellite communications up to the 79º north latitude

Thus, vessels in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and the water area of the Northern Sea Route will gain access to the Internet.

This was discussed during the meeting with Maksut Shadayev, Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation, on January 25. The representatives of federal authorities, the Federal Agency for Fishery, Rosatom, Roscosmos, Gazprom and others took part in the meeting.

CFMC and Gazprom Space Systems signed a cooperation agreement in 2021, which provides for testing of different options for organization of the satellite communication channels, including the broadband Internet access.

The tests were carried out on the vessels in the Far East, Northern and Azov-Black Sea fishery basins from October to December 2021. The operational reliability of the equipment was verified by tests in various weather conditions, including in the area of the Svalbard archipelago.

The test results of the domestic satellite communications were considered during an extended meeting at the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation. As a result of the meeting, instructions were given to carry out further actions to develop the domestic satellite communications systems in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.
